Why packaging that looks great on screen fails on the shelf
Almost every packaging decision is approved on a monitor at arm's length. Almost no purchase decision is made that way.

Packaging is reviewed on a colour-calibrated screen, at full brightness, from fifty centimetres, by people who already know what the product is. It is bought under warm retail lighting, at a metre and a half, by someone scanning past forty competitors.
Test at distance, on paper
Print every direction at actual size, put it on a shelf among real competitors, step back to a metre and a half and look under lighting similar to the retail environment. Directions that seemed obvious winners frequently collapse. Better to discover that now.
Redundant variant signals
Colour alone is the most common variant system and the most fragile — retail lighting shifts perception, and a meaningful share of shoppers have some degree of colour vision deficiency. Use colour plus an illustrated cue plus a typographic difference, so recognition survives when one signal fails.
The thumbnail is a separate design problem
- Shelf artwork rarely survives reduction to 200 pixels
- Marketplace grids crop aggressively and inconsistently
- Variant cues need to be far larger proportionally online
- Design the e-commerce treatment deliberately, do not export the pack
If a shopper has to read the label to find the variant they buy every week, the design has failed at its main job.
Design the range, then the pack
Ranges grow. A system that accommodates fourteen SKUs but has no rule for the fifteenth will break the first time marketing launches a limited edition. Define the variant architecture before designing any individual pack.
