The challenge
Northline moved industrial freight across four states but kept losing enterprise tenders to larger operators. Their existing mark — a generic arrow over a wordmark — appeared, with minor variation, on half the competitors in the category. In procurement reviews where the brand was the first signal of scale, they read as small.
Our approach
We audited the category before designing anything
Forty-two competitor marks were collected and mapped. Arrows, globes and swooshes accounted for the overwhelming majority. That told us what to avoid more usefully than any brief could, and gave Northline a defensible reason to move away from a symbol they were attached to.
We built the mark from their actual route network
Rather than an abstract arrow, the symbol derives from the geometry of Northline's primary corridor — a directional form that resolves into an "N" at small sizes. It is specific to this business in a way a stock metaphor cannot be.
We designed for the hardest application first
Fleet livery is the highest-volume, lowest-control application in logistics: applied by vinyl shops, viewed at speed, in poor light. We designed the trailer application first and let the constraints there discipline every other decision.
The outcome
The identity rolled out across 60 vehicles, two depots and the full tender document suite within a quarter. Northline reported that the rebrand shifted early-stage procurement conversations away from questions about capacity — the mark was doing credibility work before anyone opened the proposal.
“They pushed back on our brief, and they were right to. The audit made it obvious we were about to spend money looking like everyone else all over again.”
